Masque

New Belfast's Carnival & Dramatic Arts programme

Masque is New Belfast’s carnival and dramatic arts programme which offers workshops in a variety of performance related activities such as dance, drama, costume and mask design, set and prop building, and carnival float dressing. Groups can use the project to explore their personal and community identities, and issues that are of importance to them.

Participating groups choose the level they want to work at; for example, projects may take the form of a series of taster sessions as part of a summer scheme, or on a larger scale, the design and dressing of floats for a community carnival.

A final performance may not always be the end point to a workshop programme, often participants prefer to exhibit documentation of the project as it evolves, then use this as a starting point for further developing their interest in a particular art form.

Masque is the most sociable of New Belfast’s programmes! We have worked with community carnivals and arts festivals across Northern Ireland and beyond.

A wide variety of groups have taken part in our programmes, with participants from differing religious and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and of various abilities, from the ages of 6 to 66. We have also undertaken work specifically with groups with disabilities through the Side by Side project, bringing them alongside able bodied groups with great success.

Yet again, in 2010, Masque proves itself to be the most sociable of all the new Belfast Projects! Participants from Six groups across our city enjoyed themselves taking part in a series of reminiscence, drama, dance and visual art making projects that have resulted in the following; a new performance piece created for the opening of the refurbished Newhill Youth Centre, two large scale visual art pieces permanently sited in the recently refurbished Saints Youth Club, a dance group from the Lower Shankill to take part in a City Wide dance festival, and a whole heap of new friendships built across town.
